Final Hodge Podge Play Reading

After a successful reading of Women and Guns by Steve Gold in January, and Spake by David L. Williams in February, Hodge Podge concludes March 4, 2012 at 2:00pm at ARTS/West with a reading of The Dissolution of Mr. Stein by Marianne Hales Harding an alumnus of the Ohio University Graduate Playwrighting program; currently of St. George, Utah.

In The Dissolution of Mr. Stein, Vic Stein, a local political candidate and pillar of the community, creates an alter ego online to do some anonymous research on a popular social networking website. Emboldened by his anonymity he ventures further and further into his pretend world, only to find that it is very real with very real consequences.

Each selected play is presented as an informal reading. A reading is defined as actors presenting the words of a script, using scripts-in-hand. With no rehearsals prior to the public reading, each reading will be kept extremely simple so that the playwright's words may be the focus of the event. All readings will be followed by a potluck (bring a dish to share!) and moderated talk back session where audience members are invited to enjoy homemade cuisine and to give their feed-back on the plays.

All events are free and open to the public and begin at 2:00 PM. Donations are encouraged. To receive a copy of the play to be read, please make reservations by calling 740/592.4315 at least 48 hours in advance.

Far From Abandoned is an electronic/christian hardcore band from Plain City, Ohio. Having been in a previous band (The Last Six Pages), the members of FFA are no stranger to the stage. Over the last year these guys have been hard at work crafting their sound in preparation for their debut EP. With the help of Landon Tewers, (The Plot In You, Ex- Before Their Eyes) the band has already mastered a few of their tracks including their hit "Refuge". Influenced by bands such as The Devil Wears Prada & UnderOATH, new listeners can expect to hear an addicting blend between vicious screams and clean vocals.

LEARN TO MEDITATE 2/22/12, 7:30PM

Every Wednesday from 7:30 to 8:30 PM, February 22nd to April 11th, Cleo Wolf, RN will be teaching a class on meditation right here at ARTS/West.

Anyone can learn to meditate. Meditation has numerous health benefits including:

Strengthening the immune system
Lowering stress and anxiety
Lowering blood pressure

This class is offered to introduce participants to meditation as a tool for health, happiness and mental development. We will address meditation as a holistic practice and discuss factors that contribute to success. Various seated or reclining postures, walking, and movement will be introduced. A variety of meditation objects will be introduced and explored. Advanced subjects will be discussed and explored.

"As a child of two Ohio University professors specializing and focusing on history, art history, cartography, and interior design, I was exposed to many forms of artistic expression (literature, music, theater, visual arts). In addition, my mother (Catherine Mcquaid-Steiner) was an accomplished working artist who taught and revealed styles and techniques, which over my lifetime, has been absorbed and consequently impacted my stylistic preferences. All of this created an encouraging atmosphere for my personal interests and expanded artistic growth.My background is quite varied, with degrees that are focused on: archeology, anthropology, art history, and the biological and physical sciences. My formal art training includes: painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography. These combined areas of study have influenced my present work in many aspects of interpretation and representation."

"I work with ink and watercolor as primary mediums in an abstract manner. This Kaleidoscope series is an interpretive study of varied cellular structures. I have used line and color to portray motion in a static form."

The Hodge Podge Play Reading Series continues on February 5, 2012 at 2:00 pm and will feature the new play Spake by David L. Williams.

Hodge Podge Readings will be held one Sunday a month January-March 2012 at ARTS/West, located at 132 W. State St. in Athens, Ohio. The readings will be presented in an information setting and guests are encouraged to bring a pot luck dish to share.

Spake Synopsis: In a packed Siberian church on a snowy day, a priest gives a eulogy for a 109 year old town leader. Suddenly, the stage goes dark as the church caves in, killing everyone inside. Everyone who speaks the regional language of Ujide is dead. Everyone except for great grandson Nicholas, who remained at Cornell University for finals. At Cornell, linguistics major Jessica is planning her thesis: finding an original wellspring language, an idea explored by famed Ithaca serial killer Edward Rulloff. Jessica doesn't know about Siberia, but she will; she dumped Nicholas a month ago for divinity student Cal. The church collapse begins an amazing sequence of events involving the Voynich Manuscript (a famous untranslated text), a gathering spell, the return of both Edward Rulloff and Nicholas' younger sister Irina, and a reversal of the Tower of Babel. By the end, a few flakes of snow have changed the world forever.

David L. Williams is a graduate of the theatre department of Cornell University, where he was a four time award recipient in the Heerman's-McCalmon Playwriting contest. Since then, he has written more than twenty-five plays and musicals. He is a member of the Dramatist Guild and has won the Riverside Stage Company's Founder's Award and the EBE Ensemble's "You Fill In The Blank" festival. Additionally he has been named a finalist in Inkwell Theatre's Inkubator Festival (Washington, D.C.) and a two-time finalist in HotCity Theatre's GreenHouse New Play Festival (St. Louis). His career highlights include having four of his plays and musicals selected for the New York International Fringe Festival. His work has also been produced in Illinois, California, Massachusetts, Florida, and Washington, D.C. He lives in New York City with his wonderful wife Kathleen.

ARTS/West presents The Honeycutters live in concert on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 8:00pm.

In a world that is becoming increasingly digitalized and impersonal, the Honeycutters are building a reputation based on live performance and songs that tend to stick with you. Since putting out that first album the Honeycutters have shared the stage with such Americana favorites as Tony Rice, The Steep Canyon Rangers, The Seldom Scene, and more.

Singer/songwriter Amanda Anne Platt has been hailed as "one of the best songwriters coming out of WNC these days" by WNCW programming director Martin Anderson, and her voice has been described as "perfectly unadorned" and "recklessly beautiful".

They are currently making plans for the release of their sophomore album, "When Bitter Met Sweet." The Honeycutters' unique style of americana music is just as at home in Athens, Ohio as it is in Asheville, North Carolina. The folk sounds of The Honeycutters are perfect for the rustic, Appalachian venue that ARTS/West provides and we do not expect to see another band like The Honeycutters for some time.

ARTS/West is pleased to announce our exciting new opportunity for new play development. We received well over 100 submission for our Humble Play last year and 4 days just wasn't long enough for all of the great new plays we wanted to read, The Hodge Podge Play Reading Series was born!

Jan. 8, 2012, 2:00pm- Reading of Women and Guns by Steve Gold of Jamesburg, New Jersey

Women and Guns

Synopsis

This play details the life of a female Marine MP, Tiffany Hansen, who is sent to Baghdad during the Iraq war, leaving behind her civilian boyfriend in southern California. The play follows the Marine from her first day in Basic training to her subsequent deployment in Iraq. Along the way, she meets Bobby, a car mechanic who will become her companion. The psychological effect of her deployment both on her and Bobby is examined, as is her reaction to her subsequent accidental killing of an Iraqi girl.

The play makes the point that Tiffany serves in combat even though women are officially barred from doing so by act of congress. Indeed, this play could not have been written before the Iraq war because the social conditions did not exist: Iraq is the first American conflict in which women serve in combat on a large scale. To date, almost five hundred women have been killed in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Phil Kline's Unsilent Night in Athens!

Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night is a free outdoor participatory sound sculpture of many individual parts, recorded on cassettes, CDs and mp3s, and played through a roving swarm of boom-boxes carried through city streets every December. People bring their own boom-boxes and drift peacefully through a cloud of sound which is
different from every listener's perspective. Since 1992, this 45-minute work has grown into a worldwide annual communal event that has become an essential part of many winter holiday celebrations. Anyone can produce this--individuals, arts organizations, museums, universities, towns & cities have presented it.

The nobrow.music.collective is presenting this year's only Ohio performance of Phil Kline's Unsilent Night! All you need to participate is a battery powered boom-box, a mp3 player with external speakers or an iphone/ipod touch/ipad. We'll meet at 6pm on Wednesday, December 21st at Donkey Coffee (show up at least 15 minutes early if you need a tape/cd), then begin our 45-minute journey through uptown Athens.

The story voices the continuing struggle for balance and survival between humankind and the earth's natural forces.

Ohio Valley Summer Theater, in its 60th season of community-university theater productions are in their sixth year of offering quality Youth Theater plays to the area schools at a low fee. Professional directors and designers create a performance using local acting students and area talent to give children an experience seeing live theater. We are pleased this year to have Ohio University School of Theater faculty Rebecca Vernooy directing The Sapphire Comb.

12/6/11, 7:00pm- ARTS/West will be presenting a free screening of a performance of black American poet Russell Goings's "The Children of Children Keep Coming" an Epic Griot Song. Mr. Going's beautiful telling of the Black American Story speaks through the voices of historical figures and fictional characters, expressing the rhythm, the sound, the voice of black American people.

The screening will help to spark discussion, generate ideas, and form a steering committee to plan a visit and live performance from Mr. Goings.

Join us at ARTS/West for A Literary Evening featuring Marie Manilla and Laura Treacy Bentley reading their work!

West Virginia native Marie Manilla is a Pushcart-Prize nominee and graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop. Her fiction has appeared in The Chicago Tribune as a Nelson Algren finalist; Prairie Schooner, where she received the Lawrence Foundation Award for best short story; Mississippi Review; Calyx Journal; The Portland Review; The Long Story; Kestrel; GSU Review; and other journals. Her collection of stories, Still Life with Plums (West Virginia University Press, 2010), was nominated for the Weatherford Award and ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year in the short story category. Author Daniel Wallace selected her forthcoming novel, Shrapnel, as winner of the Fred Bonnie Award for best first novel sponsored by River City Publishing. Laura Treacy Bentley is a poet, fiction writer, teacher, and book editor ("Conversations") for WV Living Magazine. She served as writer in residence for the past three years at the Marshall University Writing Project in Huntington, West Virginia. Her work has appeared in the United States and Ireland, and her first book of poetry, Lake Effect, was published in 2006 by Bottom Dog Press in Huron, Ohio. In 2003 Laura was one of seven featured writers at a literary symposium which was held in Athens, Ohio: Appalachians: Contemporary Cultural Perspective. That same year she traveled to Venice California, to read her poetry with Ray Bradbury. Laura received a Fellowship Award for Literature from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts, and her poetry has been featured on the websites of A Prairie Home Companion and Poetry Daily. Women of Appalachia Project presents "Women Speak Autumn"

A celebration of female literary and performing artists

ARTS/West, 132 W. State St. is pleased to announce that on November 4, at 6 p.m. the Women of Appalachia Project will present "Women Speak, Autumn 2011!", an evening of story, poetry and song, in the ARTS/West performance space. The event is the fifth presentation of spoken artistry, presented by the WOAP, created and performed by women of all ages living in Southeast Ohio.

This fall's event highlights the work of nine writers and musicians from Athens, Meigs and Hocking counties, offering a variety of topics inspired by real life issues. Founder/curator of the project, Kari Gunter-Seymour points out that women naturally come to each other to share experiences and dreams, building strong connections and communities. "Spoken art gives the listener an immediate experience - first we react to the sounds sliding in and out and across our senses, then just as quickly, we connect with the content of the imagery the artist has chosen to share with us."

"Women Speak" encourages regional female artists to address the way in which living in this region of Appalachia has influenced their lives and therefore their art. Local teen pianist Maya Sattler, says, "My teacher, Linda Lucasik and other regional musicians and groups have greatly affected my varied taste in music, especially my interest in indie rock, folk music, and other genres with a similar lack of recognition from mainstream media. My piece was written for the joy of the music and the subversion of typical form rather than any abstruse meaning or deliberate plan."

Veteran performers Wendy McVicker and Cathy Cultice Lentes share their personal experiences of life-changing events during an Athens County flood and the tornado that hit Xenia, Ohio. Poet Joyce Richardson quips, "I am now writing a series of poems about the members of my family: saints and sinners. Uncle John is one of the sinners."

When speaking of her piece Arab Summer Rural Athens, Ohio, Ellie DeLaval Davis says, "I read of individuals in the midst of revolutions, fighting for human rights. In my own world I faced the most violent electrical storms of my life." Young mother and poet, Cathy Lee says, "I sat entranced watching remembrances on television of 9-11 on its tenth anniversary, this one man's voice echoing in my head at night. This poem is my attempt to put his voice with the whole picture, including my hope for healing."

Dancer, singer, knitter and poet, Sherri Saines says "As a victim of more than one passion, I end up using one to explain the other. Someday I will dance my love of poetry, and probably knit about singing,"

Essayist Becky Code explores, "the relationship between tears, society, and self-identity against the backdrop of the empty-nest syndrome."

"Happy Days"

Samuel Beckett's Happy Days - theatre to tickle your gray cells as well as your funny bone - will have four performances on October 20th, 21st and 22nd at 8:00 pm, with a Sunday 23rd matinee at 2:30 pm. Produced by award-winning actor/director Lyrr Descy and theatre veteran Ron Luce as part of the ARTS/West Presents series.

In Happy Days, Beckett explores with comic irony and pathos those aspects of the human condition informed by our essential isolation as individuals even within relationships; by the rituals to which we resort to give shape and meaning to our daily lives, the importance we place on structured time, the objects we use to trigger the memories on which our sense of identity depend, and the struggle to make sense of, and see order in, a perverse and chaotic universe. And still, as Beckett intimated, to go down singing... Award-winning actor/director Lyrr Descy reprises her role as Winnie in this rare Athens production of a Beckett classic. Come experience life through the senses and memories of the indomitable and ever optimistic Winnie-- and her Willie played by Athens theatre veteran Ron Luce.

Humble Play 2011: who, what, where, and when!

The 2011 Humble Play: New Play Festival of Appalachian Ohio is fast approching. Celebrate new plays with us 10/6-10/9!

This year it is our honor to dedicate the festival to W. R. Smiddie- Mr. Smiddie was instrumental in the birth of the play festival. Local playwright, potter, activist, and dear friend we will honor his memory by celebrating the birth of new plays in his name. He was loved and admired for his folk pottery adorned with flowers, his plays that combined imaginative humor with strong social justice messages, and his tireless political activism on behalf of those without. No matter how difficult the odds were against his convictions, he lived with the philosophy, "Never give up."

We are excited to bring in guest playwright Raymond Hardie who will attend the readings and moderate the audience talk-back sessions after each reading!

Who's Who and What's What:

Raymond Hardie is currently developing Stoker, originally a play, into a hybrid musical with composer/lyricist Joe Jackson. It was most recently presented in workshop at The Director's Company in New York City in May 2010. Hardie's play Blue Heaven was presented in workshop at The Director's Company in New York in 2003 with Colm Meaney and Laila Robbins. The Countess and Chicago May was presented at the Ashland New Play Festival October 13th - October 20th, 2002. His play Stoker was first presented in equity workshop at The Director's Company in New York City in August, 2001.

Hardie was an actor at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, for six years, during which time he played over thirty roles ranging from the Duke in Measure for Measure to Lenin in Tom Stoppard's Travesties.

He received his training at the Bristol Old Vic Theater School and then spent a year with the Liverpool Playhouse before going to Dublin. In New York, he played Cliff opposite Malcolm McDowell in Look Back in Anger at the Roundabout Theater. This was subsequently taped for Showtime. He has also acted at the Huntington Theater in Boston and the Olney in Maryland among others.

While at the Abbey Theatre, he wrote Who Flies the Nets for the Document Theatre Company. The play had a successful run on the London fringe after it toured England. The Abbey Theatre later commissioned him to write a play about Oliver Goldsmith, But Few Soldiers, which they performed at the international Goldsmith festival. He was also commissioned by BBC Televison to write two teleplays, A Soldier's Song and Rub A Dub Dub.

His first novel Abyssos was published by Tor Books in New York, and for a number of years he travelled back and forth to London writing television scripts and a television series for BBC television as well as working on two film scripts for Mark Forstater Productions. K. Biadaszkiewicz (The Charity Fish Fry Tinikling Show) is the author of over 100 plays, many of which have been produced throughout the US and in Europe. Her stories, poems, dramas, and comedies have been published in various literary journals and anthologies, including Sweet Annie Review; Southern Exposure (Institute for Southern Studies); Mississippi Review; Young Women's Monologs from Contemporary Plays (SUNY Potsdam); One Act Plays for Acting Students (Meriwether); The Actors' Scenebook: Great Monologues and Dialogues from Classical and Contemporary Theatre (Meriwether); and the Applause Books anthology, Best American Short Plays.

Her published theatre scripts include TRANE: BEYOND THE BLUES (the story of jazz artist John W. Coltrane); PAST ANGRY (the story of the Hamlet, NC chicken processing plant industrial fire); POTATO GIRL; and the comedy THE MAN WHO BURIED HIS DOGS IN THE FRONT YARD. Her short fiction, "Me & My Brother & the Skunk" is part of the acclaimed Weighted Words anthology, Solace in So Many Words.

THE CHARITY FISH FRY TINIKLING SHOW, written at the Millay Colony for the Arts, was first workshopped at the Dramatists Guild's Frederick Lowe Room in New York City by Multistages Theatre Company, exactly ten days after September 11, 2001.

Merri Biechler (What Ever Happened to Baby Abby?) received her MFA in playwriting from Ohio University. Her plays include Bombs, Babes and Bingo (world premiere at Mortar Theatre Company, 2012; New Orleans Fringe Festival; Artist's Laboratory Theatre workshop; Semi-finalist, P73 Playwriting Fellowship; Finalist, Clubbed Thumb Theater Biennial commission); Confessions of a Reluctant Caregiver (Finalist, Princess Grace Award; Winner, Jane Chambers Student Playwriting Award; Finalist, Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition; Participant, WordBRIDGE Playwrights Laboratory); and Real Girls Can't Win (Nominee, Stavis Award and David Mark Cohen Award; Victory Gardens Theatre workshop; Productions at Ohio University, Centenary College, Indiana State-KCACTF Region III production; and upcoming Augustana College.)

Lawrence DuKore (An Unlikely Hero) began his writing career with the Richard Pryor film, GREASED LIGHTNING, which was produced by Hanna Weinstein for Warner Bros. His television play, A MISTAKEN CHARITY was produced by Lindsay Law for PBS/American Playhouse and was nominated for a Writers Guild of America award for best dramatic writing. He is a member of both the HB (Herbert Berghof/Uta Hagen) Playwrights Foundation and the Actors Studio Playwrights/Directors Workshop. His plays have been produced regionally (CentreStage, Greenville, South Carolina; Jewish Ensemble Theatre, West Bloomfield, Michigan, etc.) and off-Broadway. EXPLODING THE SWAN had its world premiere at the Montauk Playhouse, produced by Bill and Anita Brown.

Most recently, his play, STAINED GLASS, premiered off-Broadway at the award-winning Metropolitan Playhouse.

William Robert Smiddie (1931-2011) (Death Squad) born during the Great Depression in a Harlan County Kentucky where his mom would drag him out of school when the shooting wars started. She wanted her kids around her in any storm. From Kentucky they moved to middle Tennessee where his father, a union man, would not take work because there were no unions. This sort of thing has influenced him greatly. After five years of high school at McMinnville, Tennessee he graduated only because of basketball. He played guard and never cared who won as long as the game was aggressive and close. (This is important later.)

From his first job at a DuPont plant he was drafted during the Korean War, while all his buddies could avoid the draft as their rich fathers sent them off to college. A fact of the draft he has never forgotten. Why him? Why Korean? And why not them?

Back in the states, a veteran on the G.I. bill he went to college at middle Tennessee State University. He attended Graduate school at Iowa State where he is still one course short of the much sought after M.F.A.

While working in the welfare department in Nashville he had theprivilege of participating in the Civil Rights struggle by preparing used cars with Tennessee tags for dumb white kids from the North to use to enter the deep South. And while there had a play produced in NYC, which allowed him to meet Tom Hayden in New Jersey. It now seemed to him that he could control his own life, which had finally begun. After which, turning down a organizing job with the Highlander Folk School he moved with wife and kids to Cleveland, Ohio to work with S.D.S. in the inner city. Welfare Rights, Free Clinics, and helping to organize the 1968 police riot in Chicago. From there to the street demonstrations against the only war America has ever lost.

He settled in in Southern Ohio where he made pottery, wrote unfinished plays, and dreamt of Alaska.

THE CHARITY FISH FRY TINIKLING SHOW is about a young woman who has never heard her father say he is proud of her. She works very hard to assemble and put on a one-of-a-kind show and lets him know, so he can attend. After all her efforts, she fails in her goal. But she finds something better. My artistic take on this piece is that it is an innovative and entertaining physical theatre piece ideal for energetic actors and a director with a playful imagination and comedic sensibility. THE CHARITY FISH FRY TINIKLING SHOW has been described by its original director as commedia dell'arte, but I wrote it to represent a part of my own experience that I treasure.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY ABBY?
Writer's Statement

This play is about a young woman trying to define her life as meaningful and her job choice as successful.
"We all remember where we were on that snowy March morning in 1972 when, after 41 hours of national news coverage, we watched as Baby Abby was pulled out alive from that Wisconsin ice cave. As the twenty-five year anniversary of the rescue approaches, Abigail Walters discovers that she's Baby Abby and to her horror realizes that she's done nothing with her life to justify her being saved."

As our society continues to define happiness as the number of cars in our garage and the amount of money in the bank, how does someone with an ordinary life compete with the media? How do we define our internal worth?

I want to ask my audience: can a small life be a life well lived? Can everyday choices give meaning to our lives? Would we be happier if we stepped away from what the media defines as important to find that importance for ourselves within our own communities?

AN UNLIKELY HERO
Writer's Statement

This play is a tribute to Ulysses Grant, not as a historic or heroic figure, but as a human being, with all his doubts about himself, his guilt about the deaths of Union and Confdederate troops (and yet the necessity for his military strategy), about His failings as a provider for his family, his limitations as a president, as a general and his lack of business acumen, which caused great hardship to his family.. Mostly, my play is about a person with whom an audience can identify.

DEATH SQUAD The play examines the events that led to a terrible massacre in El Salvador in 1981, aided and abetted by the American government. It does so by the device of five people in 2011 who come together to create and rehearse a play that addresses these matters. It alternates in tone from comic to grimly serious.

Forks Over Knives Documentary Returns to Athens Along with Panel Discussion from Local Success Stories

On Wednesday September 28th at 7:00pm, the popular new documentary Forks Over Knives is returning to Athens in collaboration between ARTS/West and the Athens Coronary Health Improvement Project (CHIP). The film will be shown, followed by a panel discussion with Athens CHIP alumni. Half of all donations will go to fund future CHIP scholarships.

Forks Over Knives examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by embracing a whole foods plant-based diet. The storyline traces the personal journeys of Dr. T. Colin Campbell, a nutritional biochemist from Cornell University, and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, a former top surgeon at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic. Inspired by remarkable discoveries in their careers, these men conducted several groundbreaking studies. Their separate research led them to the same startling conclusion: degenerative diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even several forms of cancer, could almost always be prevented—and in many cases reversed—by adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet.

Bringing these scientific concepts to life, cameras follow real people who have chronic conditions from heart disease to diabetes, and are taught by their doctors to adopt a whole foods plant-based diet as the primary approach to treat their ailments. The film features leading experts on health and tackles the issue of diet and disease in a way that will have people talking for years.

The Coronary Health Improvement Project is an international program providing a comprehensive, educationally intensive lifestyle intervention designed to prevent, arrest, and reverse essential hypertension, type 2 diabetes, obesity, heartburn, arthritis, elevated cholesterol and heart disease. Athens CHIP has 47 local alumni and 70 current class participants. Alumni with very high to dangerously high cholesterol saw reductions between 15-35%. Diabetics had a 23% reduction in glucose levels. Reductions in blood pressure, triglycerides and weight were across the board. The alumni will join a panel discussion to share their success stories after making healthy lifestyle changes.

2011 Humble Play

It is the mission of Humble Play: New Play Festival of Appalachian Ohio to promote the art of playwriting while introducing the process of play development to an audience. This is achieved by inviting playwrights to submit their new plays to a committee of judges. These judges chose plays to be produced as staged readings by local theater artists for the general public as a once a year festival.

This year it is our honor to dedicate the festival to W. R. Smiddie- Mr. Smiddie was instrumental in the birth of the play festival. Local playwright, potter, activist, and dear friend we will honor his memory by celebrating the birth of new plays in his name.

Moon High: Moon High began in 2007 as a home recording project between two like-minded Ohio musicians. Their auspicious self-titled debut was released the following year and prompted the duo to recruit additional members to adapt their multi-layered sounds on stage. After a couple years of member changes, ongoing praise, and honing their live performance, Moon High has evolved into a tight-knit quartet determined to play their own brand of melodious folk tunes.

In 2010, Moon High released 'Smoke Before My Eyes,' a limited run 7" that epitomizes their sound. Moon High has since embarked on the completion of their long-anticipated, full-length sophomore album. 'Six Suns,' released in July 2011, is bookended with the band's more elegant instrumental pieces and dances between up tempo, country-tinged pop songs, dreamy laments, and moments of near rock-and-roll. Brick Monkey Theater Ensemble, Southeast Ohio's professional theater company, will lead a community response to mark the ten year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Defiant tells the story of Ann Martin, a woman who incurs the wrath of a grieving country when she refuses to memorialize her husband following his death in a national tragedy. This play asks difficult questions about what it means to grieve, what it means to be a patriot, and how a decision to not honor the dead can be seen as treasonous.

This new work from Insurgent Theatre seeks to manifest imprisonment on stage, overlays it with critical analysis of the system, and follows up with in-depth discussion about abolishing prison in America.

Created in workshop by Weslie Coleman, Kate Pleuss, and Ben Turk, with assistance from Harmony Bench and Rebecca Riley.

Touring the US in 2011. Raising funds for RedBird Prison Abolition. Supporting prisoners in Ohio.

Cary Ann Hearst & Michael Trent prefer to keep it simple. They have cleverly managed to take 3 separate recording projects and combine them into 1 cohesive, folk rock, sloppy tonk, harmonized, loose but tight, streamlined audience killing machine. Michael Trent (Texas/Colorado) has just released his second solo album entitled "The Winner", and Cary Ann Hearst (Mississippi/Tennessee) is about to release her second record "Lions & Lambs". Together hey have one duo release "Shovels & Rope" which was came out in 2008 and are currently working on the follow up "Shovels & Rope V.2" in their house, van, and backyard. At the shows, expect to hear a little something from any or all of these releases - while the duo switch instruments and share lead vocal duties. W.R. Smiddie: Memorial Celebration

On Sunday, August 21st from 1-3 PM at ARTS/West there will be an open Memorial Celebration for our dear friend W. R. Smiddie. The memorial will feature: remembrances, music, pottery, and theater. An open mic will be available at some point.

Participants who own a piece of his pottery are encouraged to bring it and place it with others on the apron of the stage.

Following the the tradition of play readings at his home, the family asks that as possible you please bring a dessert or appetizer to share at the reception that will follow in the basement area.

We have had a very busy summer- so far! We hope you have been enjoying it as much as we have. The Stephen's Literacy Center wrapped up their week long literacy camp, Kids Ink! last Friday with a beautiful reading presented by the campers. Three camps down, one to go! The Appalachian Progressive Education Center takes the stage on July 24th for their week-long theater and art camp.

Thank you to our volunteers who helped to create the 22nd quilt block for the Athens County Quilt trail this weekend at Boogie on the Bricks. And, big thank you to the Athens County Convention and Visitors Bureau and The Dairy Barn for making it possible. If you missed your chance to see the quilt block, do not fret, location will be announced soon!

We will be spending our "free" week cleaning, weeding and straightening up. If you need some volunteer hours please contact artswestathens at gmail dot com. I'm sure we could use the help.

Rex McGraw, retired professor, experienced actor and director, will return to the OVST stage to direct To Kill a Mockingbird. McGraw has directed eleven productions for OVST. After years of teaching, McGraw moved to Athens in 1969 where he taught acting and directing and eventually became head of the Professional Graduate Directing Program.

Set in Alabama during the Great Depression, TKAM follows the journey of Jem and Scout Finch, whose father has been appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man framed for a crime he didn't commit.

Hey Look, It's a Piano!
People are naturally drawn to a piano, especially when someone is playing! This year we're pitching a 10×10 piano tent right on Court Street and asking local players to join in the acoustic fun by sharing 15 minutes of their time playing. Individuals or small groups may perform, and limited seating will be provided under the tent. You may bring any other acoustic instrument you like, including harmonicas, guitars, violins, bongos, spoons, washboard, dulcimer, trumpet, saxophone......well, you get the picture. All ages are encouraged to participate in their 15 minutes of fame!

Paint A Giant Quilt Square
During Boogie on the Bricks, festival-goers will have a chance to paint part of a giant quilt square that will become part of the Athens County Quilt Barn Trail. The Dairy Barn Arts Center, in celebration of their biennial Quilt National Exhibition, will provide the wooden square as a blank slate, along with lots of paint. During the festival, you can paint anything you like on the square! After the festival, the outline of a traditional quilt pattern will be painted over the top of the public artwork, and and the square will be mounted in a prominent location to be announced soon!

Athens Rock camp for Girls and ARTS/West invites you to attend a public concert on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 7:00 pm. Admission is $5 and donations will be accepted.

30 girls ages 11-18 and their instructors have been meeting at ARTS/West for a week to learn to rock, form a band, and put together a show! You are invited to join them in their first ever rock show!

The Athens Rock Camp for Girls builds self esteem through music creation and performance. Today we say goodbye to the Ohio University and Athens area high school graduates.

We are especially proud of ARTS/West team members Drew O'Bryan and Jess Craine! Drew has been a work study student here for over two years. A lot has changed but not our appreciation for all of your hard work and the gift you've given us, Judy the ARTS/West cat! Break a leg in NYC, kid. Jess has been with us a year and has grown into quite the producer and arts advocate. She had the opportunity to try a little of everything here from Creative Endeavors Workshop, Americans for the Arts Coordination, and the never ending filing. You will both be missed.

The OU School of Theater students have been so good to us here at ARTS/West we are sorry to see a lot of you go but, we expect great things! Thank you for your hard work, volunteer days, getting us out of jams, fixing our equipment and building our sets. Please say you've given a good report to the incoming students!

The Corporation for the Performing Arts and ARTS/West announce applications for HUMBLE PLAY: new play festival of Appalachian Ohio

ARTS/West, Athens community gateway to the arts, 132 W. State St., is partnering with the Corporation for the Performing Arts and the Athens Community to present the 6th Annual HUMBLE PLAY: NEW PLAY FESTIVAL OF APPALACHIAN OHIO, this coming October 6-8, 2011, and they are pleased to invite submissions from playwrights.

Acknowledging gifted writers with new plays that speak to a regional audience, ARTS/West will open its doors for these new works October 6-8, 2011.

The 2010 Festival featured: The Dying Words of Edison Strange by Nicholas Gray (Wilmington, NC); Fuel House by Linda Felton Steinbaum (Encino CA); Born Lucky by Chris Pomeroy (Chicago, IL); Her Summer Fling by Merri Biechler, (Guysville, OH); Quit the Road Jack by Jerry Polner, (Brooklyn, NY); Last Call and Squirrelly by James McLindon, (Northampton, MA)

PARTICIPATION: We are seeking plays that will highlight the work of playwrights from across the nation and will, in turn, highlight the actors and directors of Appalachia generally and Southeastern Ohio specifically through play development/production in our area, at the ARTS/West facility during the festival.

APPLICATIONS: Applications will be accepted from March 4 to June 3, 2011.

Humble Play Mission Statement

It is the mission of Humble Play: New Play Festival of Appalachia Ohio to promote the art of playwrighting while introducing the process of play development to an audience. Environmental Theater Brigade

The Environmental Theater Brigade along with ARTS/West and the Sierra Student Coalition are proud to announce their partnership in the creation of a year-end, environmental education event this Tuesday, May 31st at 7 p.m.

The event will feature this year’s final performance by the Environmental Theater Brigade, a student-run organization that focuses on creative environmental education through the form of skits. There will also be a discussion panel about environmental and human rights issues, thanks to members of the local Sierra Club.

ARTS/West will be hosting the event at their location on 132 W. State Street in Athens, Ohio. The event is open to all members of the Athens community and $2 donations will be accepted at the door, with all the proceeds going to ARTS/West.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore a variety of different writing genres and collaborate with professional authors from the local Athens area! Each student will additionally finish the week with one fully polished writing piece of their choice, which will be presented to family and friends during a Friday evening celebration. This is a great way for students to grow as young writers and to develop their composition skills through the summer!

The Ohio Valley Summer Theater is offering a youth camp designed to aid students in the development of age appropriate theatrical knowledge and skills. Our camp offerings are: puppet work, audition skills, movement and voice for the stage, and training from certified teachers.

Participants in the camp will have an opportunity to gain experience in theatrical and/or technical production. Our Camp is open to students of grades Entering 2nd grade – 12th grades.

Camp times and fees are as follows:
Entering 2nd grade—6th grade = $75, 8:30am— 11:30am
Entering 7th grade—12th grade = $100, 9:30am—12:30pm

A free demonstration performance for family and friends of Amy’s Attic is Friday July 8th at 11am. Workshop fees are reduced 10% for every sibling enrolled. "The Watching is my fourth locally shot feature film. My purpose is to educate through entertainment. To me, the two are the same, and the best entertainment is educating. Bottom line in life; we need to learn how to be better people. And in The Watching, the main characters' lives literally depend on it. So it's about young people who unexpectedly attract the attention of powerful supernatural forces bent on "educating" them-- or else! We as the audience get to watch how they adapt to this challenge, besides dealing with the ordinary problems of ordinary people-- life, love and how they are going to make it day to day.

My short film, One Way Mirror, is a pointed political statement about what could happen to an educated intellectual--a college professor-- who finds himself handcuffed to a chair and accused of murder in a fascist police state called America. And what happens to him is not pretty! This film was recently accepted for competition screening at the Athens International Film Festival."

We've been sorting all week (and last week!) and I can tell you we have something for everyone. We're pleased to have a lot more men's clothes this year including suits for work or irony.

First weekend in April, Check! Big thank you to Mr. Daryl Pauley for organizing a TAGS School of Theater volunteer work day in the space. So much work, so many things repaired! We are truly in their dept. We would also be remiss if we did not thank playwright/director/producer Shawn Grindle who shared his play GRAFFITI with us this weekend. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

But, why stop there? We have another big weekend planned. We kick things off on 4/9/11, 12:00pm with Front and Center: A free music event for school age kids 2nd Saturday of each month (Sept.-May) at noon -1 pm. First Half is a special guest, second half of event is always an open stage for any kids, solo or group, to share instrumental or vocal music--if you choose. Or just listen and enjoy! This month's special guest is the Calliope Women's Chorus.

4/9/11, 7:00pm Nobrow Music Collective concert- Debut performance of the Nobrow Music Collective. What better way to begin a new music ensemble's existence than with a performance of Terry Riley's masterpiece IN C! There will be a pre-concert talk at 7:00 followed by an open performance of IN C. So bring any acoustic instrument that you want and participate in the experience yourself!

The quarter has attacked us-- we're in double time full swing here at ARTS/West! CEW is back after the short break, the OU students are back and the Humble Play: New Play Festival of Appalachian Ohio submissions have been pouring in! First up: GRAFFITI- a new play by Shawn Grindle in which every line of dialogue comes from graffiti found across the continental United States on April 2,3 at 8:00 PM as a part of the ARTS/West Presents Series.

Graffiti a new play by Shawn Grindle in which every line of dialogue comes from graffiti found across the continental United States. It is an absurd look at what the underground artists of America have to say. The graffiti has been organized to tell the story of three struggling artists who have been so unsuccessful that their struggle becomes the driving force in their lives. Through graffiti, vandalism, and philosophy they attempt to discover the importance that art has in the world, and how dangerous it can be. "Come out the first weekend after classes to see the first draft of my new absurd experimental play Graffiti. The show is about forty minutes long. There will be a talk-back after the Saturday night show."

It is an absurd look at what the underground artists of America have to say. The graffiti has been organized to tell the story of three struggling artists who have been so unsuccessful that their struggle becomes the driving force in their lives. Through graffiti, vandalism, and philosophy they attempt to discover the importance that art has in the world, and how dangerous it can be. April 2nd and 3rd 8:00 PM. ARTS/West.

Hello Cats & Kitties! The Cat's Pajamas Clothing Exchange is back for it's third year to bring you a whole new wardrobe of clothes. Last year we basically filled the entire basement of ARTS/West with items, and we hope to be full to bursting again this time. The preview party featuring DJ Barticus and FREE AVALANCHE PIZZA will occur on Friday, April 29th from 7pm-10pm. The preview party will allow you to have first access to all... of the early donations of clothing we will be receiving. The regular exchange hours are Saturday, April 30th & Sunday, May 1st from 1-6pm.

The way the exchange works is:

* Bring any unwanted clothing items to ARTS/West (132 W. State) before the first day of the event & you will be able to take as many items as you like throughout the entire event!

* If you bring clothes with you during any scheduled event hours, you can take as many items as you bought, each additional items costs $1.

* Customers pay $5 entry during the event weekend. Once customers have paid entry they can come back as many times as they like. (you only pay entry once)

* Proceeds benefit ARTS/West: Athens Community Gateway to the Arts.

*We will be seeking volunteer clothing sorters the week of the event, and during the event hours. All volunteers get free entry all weekend, unlimited clothing items, and have first dibs on any items they like while they sort.

Book by Andrew Black and Patricia Milton, Music by Caroline Altman, Lyrics by Altman/Black/Milton. It receives it's Mid-West premier at ARTS/West on March 13, 2011, at 7:00 pm.

Inspired by real people and events that led the State of Wyoming to affirm woman suffrage - fully forty years before the United States allowed women to vote or hold public office. This musical play Not Without Our Women tells the story of a critical episode in the development of equal rights for women in the United States. It is a little-known historical fact that US women were first given the right to vote and hold public office in the territory of Wyoming in 1869. This took place before voting rights were granted to US women nationwide! The struggle for what was called "woman suffrage" continued in the territory over twenty years, and when Wyoming was admitted to the United States in 1890, the struggle began anew. The title comes from the apocryphal story about what happened when the US Congress demanded that Wyoming abandon woman suffrage as a condition of statehood. The Wyoming frontier legislature debated, then shot off a terse telegram, responding "Not Without Our Women."

The creative team of Altman, Black, and Milton has had new work produced all across the country and will be joining a cast featuring community (Richard Crist, Charlie and Celia Lewis, Gay Dalzell, to name a few) and professional talent (Sarah Kathleen Farrell appearing courtesy of the Actors Equity Association from NYC) for the presentation. This production will be directed Robert L. Winters who has been directing in the Athens Community for over 50 years!

Last night Aquabear Legion kicked off it's 5th Annual County Fair at The Union Bar and Grill. Events continue throughout this weekend with the closing day being Sunday, March 6 at ARTS/West at 2:00 pm with a FREE AFTERNOON POTLUCK and the sweet, sweet sounds of the Super Desserts (Columbus), Brian Harnetty (Columbus), Adam Remnant (Athens).

You may have been or will be asked to fill out a survey by Sherri, Jess or me. Here's the skinny:

As the Athens Municipal Arts Council (AMAC) and members of the Athens County Arts Consortium begin the Americans for the Arts, Arts and Economic Prosperity IV Study (A&EP4), they are turning to the local community for help in completing an accurate survey of the arts economy in the region.

The Athens County arts and heritage culture have an enormous impact on quality of life and local economy, and the A&EP4 Study offers an opportunity to understand the economic numbers in more concrete terms. The study will be determining the economic impact of spending by nonprofit arts and culture organizations and their audiences. For example, the economic impact of fifteen dollars spent on a show ticket is more accurately accounted for when considering 1) how much of that fifteen dollars remains in the local economy, such as what percentage goes to an employee’s salary, which pays for groceries, rent, and a tank of gasoline, and 2) the amount spent overall by the audience member in meals, transportation, baby-sitting, and other items related to the event.

Athens County citizens can support this study by 1) forwarding information to AMAC about arts and culture organizations in the county, including contact information (contact person, address, phone, and email), and 2) being on the lookout for opportunities to participate in this study via surveys distributed at local arts events. Data will be collected from arts and culture patrons in simple ten-question surveys at various functions throughout the coming year. Completing a survey will only take two minutes! Surveys are essential to creating an accurate account of the economic impact of arts in the area. By completing this study, AMAC and the local Arts Consortium hope to establish a concrete understanding of the impact of arts and culture on the quality of life in Athens County; specifically, on the financial and economic sectors of our community. With this data, residents in Athens County will be able to plan for future economic arts and cultural development.

Sunday, March 6th the whole weekend comes to a close with a special afternoon free show at ARTS/West. Two of Columbus, Ohio's finest acts will join one of Athens' most well respected songwriters on the ARTS/West stage. Super Desserts and Brian Harnetty will make the trip down Route 33 from Columbus and join Southeast Engine's Adam Remnant for a special daytime show. It's also a potluck so feel free to bring something to share. Doors open at 2:00pm, the show is free but donations are encouraged to help pay the bands and the space.

Athens-based Ohio music organization Aquabear Legion will host its 5th annual Aquabear County Fair on the weekend of March 3-6, 2010.

The annual County Fair is a four day celebration of Ohio music, featuring 15 bands from our state and 1 act from Japan. The weekend kicks off at The Union on Thursday, March 3rd with a show curated by Blackout at 10pm and continues with a free show on Friday, March 4th at 10:30pm at Casa Cantina. Saturday, March 5th features yet another evening of music at The Union starting at 9pm and the whole weekend wraps up with a special free afternoon show at ARTS/West at 2pm.

We are working a lot of new plays and musicals this year and could not be more excited. New plays developed right here in Athens! When working on new works you do, however, run into some glitches so, the reading of Death Squad that was scheduled for February 26-27 has been canceled and will be rescheduled for sometime in the spring.

Sunday: Athens-based Ohio music and arts organization Aquabear Legion will be holding its annual Pancake Breakfast at ARTS/West (132 W. State Street in Athens) on Sunday, January 30th from 1pm-4pm. Aquabear is working with Snowville Creamery, Donkey Coffee, and Shagbark Mill so that people can support local music while eating local food! There will also be bacon upgrades available for a small donation. Money raised at the event will go to Aquabear Legion to help them continue their programming and work throughout the year and will help with the organization's initial non-profit filing costs. Clamlump, the Missoula Oblongata's new touring production promises the awe of misunderstanding, the privacy of laughter, and a sky dark with feathers. The Missoula Oblongata presents Clamlump, the company's latest full-size touring play. This one is of course complete with an original score performed live by Travis Sehorn (pebble light) and all of the puppetry, animated junk, and densely layered language that they've become known for.

In the mid 1800s, the radical idea that women might vote, hold public office, or own property was unthinkable. This new musical, based upon real people and events, explores what happened when the territory of Wyoming instituted woman suffrage, attracting independent women to the wild frontier. The inevitable collision of old expectations and beliefs with the irresistible forward movement of human progress affects a whole community, the territory, and eventually, the nation. Whatever the century, the path to equality is fraught with obstacles. . .and blessed with pioneers.

Auditionees should prep 32 bars each of two contrasting songs from standard musicals. Sides will be available from the script. Auditionees will be allotted 10 minutes for each audition. Accompanist will be provided, please bring sheet music in the appropriate key. Call backs will be held on January 9, 2011.

Thank you all for an amazing 2010 at ARTS/West-- the final numbers aren't in but, it looks like we had well over 900 events, classes and workshops this year! Whew! Highlights include: the Creative Endeavors Workshop afterschool program, APE and OVST performing arts camps, several screenings of locally made films, the Humble Play New Play Festival, the Cat's Pajamas Clothing exchange, Aquabear Live at ARTS/West events, The Local Girls, Matthew Griffin's Christmas Concert and on and on and on.

We can't wait to see what you have in store for us in 2011!

Also, we regret that the Studio for Young Actors will not be presenting A Christmas Carol this year- some publicity from last year's production is still circulating.

Holiday Concert to Benefit Athens County Food Pantry. Saturday, December 18 · 7:00pm

Singers Yvonne Crist and Matthew Griffin along with Pianist Harolyn Brient perform a wide variety of Holiday Musical Favorites to raise money for the Athens County Food Pantry. Yvonne will be joined by her husband Richard Crist (Director of Ohio University Opera Theater) for a special duet and at least one offering of his own. And Matthew is joined by his sister Meghan Aimoe in a rare Athens appearance. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free but donations to benefit the Athens County Food Pantry are sought -- and Matthew in his role as Master of Ceremonies is not noted for subtlety. Follow the adventures of two bumbling actors trying desperately to present a few of the world's most beloved fairy tales. Unfortunately, their script becomes seriously scrambled and they perform GoldiSOCKS and the Three WOLVES, the Three Billy TROLLS Gruff, and The Three Little BEARS, who end up battling the Big Bad BILLY GOAT to delay the decimation of their domiciles. In addition to entertaining with humor, slapstick, and charm, the characters guide the audience through this creative world. It takes the whole audience to set the stories straight. Film Screening "a movement point of view"

'a movement point of view' is a short film directed by Elizabeth Atwell in Tbilisi, Georgia at the end of her Fulbright study. The 15-min short explores themes such as decay, germination, urbanization and development through the medium of dance. Born of the belief that movement crosses bridges between languages, cultures and the soul, this film features a cast of trained and untrained female dancers. This diverse multigenerational cast make use of various dance genres including modern, Georgian folk, site-specific choreography, guided improvisation and pedestrian movement.

Additionally, local dancers Amanda Kurtz, Chelsea Goettge and Darcy Shaffner will be presenting pieces of original choreography as works-in-progress!

ARTS/West invites you to take in Sasha Michelle White's installation FINDING GROUND: Drawings 2002-2007 and to join us for the Artist's Reception on Friday, October 22, 2010 5:30-7:00 pm.

Sasha M. White grew up in rural Michigan and studied art at Bawdoin College, Ludwig-Maximillians Universitat and Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work has been exhibited in the U.S. and Europe. She currently shares her time between Maine and the foothills of Appalachia in southeast Ohio.

Humble Play Saturday, October 9 @ 7:00 pm we have a reading of the new play Quit the Road Jack by Jerry Polner produced by the Lost Flamingo Company and Last Call and Squirrelly by James McLindon produced by the A/W intern company. Mr. Polner will be joining us for the reading.

Here is what Jerry says about his play:
"This play is about a divorced couple whose 16-year-old son has run away from home. Through letters he explains that they are both total losers and he is doing some kind of political organizing work with immigrant worker rights organizations and that they should leave him alone. The mother and father don't trust each other to go look for Jack alone, so they go out together across the contry to look for their son."

Jerry Polner- “Quit the Road Jack” presented 10/9 @7:00pm

Jerry’s full-length play FIX NUMBER SIX was chosen by the Boomerang Theatre Company for its First Flight reading series in 2009. His short plays FLORENCE FAREWELL, GONE WITH THE MASHA, and THANK YOU FOR APPLYING were produced by the Brooklyn Playwrights Collective at Manhattan Theatre Source, Brecht Forum, and Galapogos Artspace. Included in his full-length plays are HALF BAKED, produced by the Story People, MAN OVERBOARD, produced by High Five Productions, and WEATHERMAN, published by Samuel French and produced by high schools around the country. His political comedy sketches, and still more, are at RadicalGags.com.

James McLindon- “Squirrelly” & “Last Call” (2 10 minute plays) presented 10/9 following "Quit the Road Jack"

Here is what James says about his plays:
Last Call: "This play is about the need to connect, the need for community and loneliness." Squirrelly is about the need to beleive, the impossibility of believing, the need to bear witness and the longing for escape."

James McLindon’s play, Comes a Faery, was developed this summer at the 2010 O’Neill National Playwrights Conference. He is currently in residence at CAP21 in New York developing his play, Salvation, which will be produced at the Hudson Stage Company in October. His other plays have been developed and/or produced at theaters such as the Abingdon, hotINK Festival, Irish Repertory, Lark Play Development Center, the Estrogenius Festival, Penguin Repertory, Emerging Artists Theatre, and Love Creek Productions; Crossing the Divide Festival in the West End of London; Victory Gardens in Chicago; Lyric Stage and Boston Playwrights Theatre in Boston; Colony Theatre, Theatricum Botanicum, Grove Theatre Center, and Circus Theatricals in Los Angeles; PlayPenn Conference, Telluride Playwrights Conference and the Arkansas Rep in Little Rock.

Humble Play Friday, October 8 @ 7:00 pm we have a reading of the new play Her Summer Fling by Merri Biechler produced by the Corporation for the Performing Arts. Ms. Biechler will be joining us for the reading.

Here is what Merri says about her play:
"This is a play about Franny- a clothing designer- who finds herself in a summer fling with a young man half her age. It is a comedy that explores themes of age and identity."

Merri Biechler’s plays include Bombs, Babes and Bingo (New Orleans Fringe Festival, November 2010) and Confessions of a Reluctant Caregiver (Princess Grace Playwriting Award finalist; WordBRIDGE Playwrights Laboratory participant). Merri acted Off-Broadway in Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding, and on E.R., Judging Amy, Murphy Brown, and in the film Trailerpark.

Humble Play Thursday, October 7 @ 7:00 pm we have a reading of the new play Born Lucky by Chris Pomeroy produced by the Brick Monkey Theater Ensemble. Mr. Pomeroy will be joining us for the reading.

Here is what Chris says about his play:
"This is a play about the economic crisis in America, and how that crisis is making it harder for people to get ahead. It started when I met someone in my Illinois hometown much like Carla (one of the principal characters in the play). I would be eager to discover with ARTS/West's audiences whether the truth I am trying to find in the play is ringing true."

Chris Pomeroy is an actor and writer, based in Chicago. His plays include Courting the Wild Man, My Affair with Lady Macbeth, and Born Lucky. Favorite recent projects include playing Wotan in a six-hour adaptation of Richard Wagner’s The Ring Cycle (The Building Stage), and a short film called Faster, which will premiere at the Chicago International Film Festival in October 2010. He can be seen onstage until Oct. 30 in a new play called The Franklin Expedition at The Building Stage in Chicago. Much love to Melissa.

Humble Play Wednesday, October 6 @ 7:00 pm we have a reading of the new play Fuel House by Linda Felton Steinbaum produced by the ABC Players.

Here is what Linda says about her play:
"Fuel House is a modern day drama that follows one family's struggle with contemporary issues. Emphasis is on the fact that the numbers of people struggling to take care of both their parents and children, in the same household, is exploding. And, of course women are most likely struggling to keep it together."

Linda Felton Steinbaum is an award winning, produced and published Los Angeles playwright. In 2007, her drama MUSTANG SALLY, published by Samuel French, was performed at The Whitefire Theatre in Los Angeles. Her play FAT CHANCE has been produced in North Hollywood as well as Sierra Madre, California where it was extended. Her award winning one-act play SHIFTING GEARS has been produced in various theatres in California, as well as Maryland and Oregon. In December of 2008, Linda received a fellowship award for her play, FUEL HOUSE. She is a member of ALAP, the Dramatists Guild, and WGA, West.

Humble Play Tuesday, October 5 @ 7:00 pm you will be treated to a table reading of the new play The Dying Words of Edison Strange by Nicholas Gray.

Here is what Nicholas says about his play:
"At its core, The Dying Words of Edison Strange is a tribute to that which I love most about the theater, its magic. It is a magical play about magical people using magical language in magical circumstances. It intends to honor the art of theater by illustrating just what is capable on a stage, and I believe that is precisely what an audience deserves and for what they yearn."

Nicholas Gray is an alumnus of the Emerson College Honors Program. His first venture as a writer was Pedestrian, the feature script that has since partnered him with Southern Gothic Productions. Pedestrian is currently in preproduction. His union with Southern Gothic (www.sogopro.com) has afforded him the great opportunities of drafting a graphic novel, creating the web pilot Friendship Union Community Theater, and helming the short film the true-love tale of Boyfriend and Girlfriend. His first play, Population: 8, world premiered at the 13th Annual New York International Fringe Festival. The Dying Words of Edison Strange is his second play.
